One Plus gets it right again with the new One Plus 8 pseudo-flagship model. The One Plus 8 still sports bleeding-edge specs and has not tethered away from its predecessors. Although, a few sacrifices had to be made to keep the pricing of a typical mid-range phone. It maintains its killer looks with a new interstellar glow model that refracts light off the glass back panel to produce vivid color combinations. The phone seems bigger with the common rectangular display, yet feels comfortable to maintain a grip on it.

The phone is light-weight considering the superior components that are present inside, weighing just over 180grams and presents a new challenge to its competitors. The major sacrifices have been done to the wireless charging support and toning down the screen resolution to 1080pixels with a 90Hz refresh rate. While this might seem like a turnoff, it is the right move to conserve the battery while maintaining a decent refresh rate.

The camera array has discarded the telephoto lens and retained the macro camera for close detailed shots. While the move seems apt, very few users use the macro sensor for regular shutters.

Pros / GOOD

  • Apt pricing considering the hardware specs
  • 30-watt warp charger with fast charging
  • Fluid and clutter-less Oxygen OS
  • Frequent security updates from Oxygen OS
  • The latest in-vogue Snapdragon 865 chipset
  • Lasts longer on a single charge due to mellowed down refresh rate
  • One of the few phones to support 5G

Cons / BAD

  • No wireless charge support despite a glass back panel
  • Toned down the resolution from 1440 pixels to 1080 pixels
  • No expandable storage option
  • No ip68 rating as seen in earlier models
  • No dedicated night photo mode

Conclusion – Should you Buy or Not?

While One Plus 8 might not seem like a great camera offering, it still captures decent quality images. The screen maintains adequate brightness while using it outdoors. The quick charging feature refuels the 50% of the battery in just under 25 minutes owing to the revolutionary Warp charging technology and an adapter that is included in the box. Wireless charging could have been accommodated considering the all-glass back panel which is compatible with the feature. Nevertheless, One Plus 8 still bears all the traits that must be present in a 2020 mid-range phone.
